The Five Turrets reopens to take in NHS staff

Scottish Borders property provides free accommodation for hospital workers tackling Covid-19 crisis

The Five Turrets in Selkirk has signed up with NHS Borders to provide free accommodation for staff working at the Borders General Hospital during the Covid-19 crisis.

The self-catering business put bookings on hold last month in response to government requests to limit travel around the country.

Owners Gethin Chamberlain and Carolynn Shaw contacted NHS Borders to make the four bedroom townhouse available for key workers.

"We'd heard that staff working at the hospital were concerned about the risk of infecting their own family members, so providing them with somewhere safe to stay seemed the right thing to do.

"These are key workers who are doing vital work at the hospital and we are sure they will be made welcome in the town when they are using shops or other facilities."

The family business is also covering the full running costs of the property for the duration of the arrangement.

NHS Borders has set up an office to arrange accommodation for key workers and bookings for The Five Turrets can now be made by contacting staff.accom@borders.scot.nhs.uk

Other property owners can also contact NHS Borders at the same email address if they wish to make their own accommodation available for key workers.

The Five Turrets is still taking bookings for later in the year and for next year and will be following government advice and instructions on reopening for paying guests.
